August is National Breastfeeding Month

It’s national Breastfeeding month! We believe breastfeeding is important in infant nutrition and development. That is why we are working on helping moms and child care providers feel supported with breastfeeding options. Currently our HEAL program is reaching out to child care providers to help create individualized site policies and practices to support breastfeeding. If your child care site would like to participate and get support in creating a healthy breastfeeding environment, please contact me at 415.491.5784 or madelene@mc3.org

Here is some of the information provided on this great link!

As a child care provider, an important thing you can do for babies is support their parents’ decisions about infant feeding, especially the mother’s breastfeeding efforts. Breast milk is the ideal food for infants to both nourish them and protect them from obesity and illness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months. It is also recommended that mothers continue to breastfeed until the baby is one year old. With so many infants in child care facilities, staff members and child care providers can play a vital role in supporting a mother’s continuation of breastfeeding.

Remember: Whether or not to breastfeed (and for how long) is a mothers personal choice. However, you can make it easier for breastfeeding moms to continue to do so, by providing a breastfeeding-friendly environment."
