February is Children Oral Health Month!
Oral health is linked to overall health and it is important as parents and providers that we support children in brushing teeth and learn more about the importance of oral health. By creating systems and routines at home and at child care facilities, children can learn best practices of oral health. Children who do have active cavities or dental infections have compromised immunity systems and health. In addition children's dental issue can hurt and make it hard for children to eat healthy food such as carrots and apples.
Here are some important things to keep in mind!
Baby teeth matter! Good oral health matters even for young children.
Brush twice a day for 2 minutes, this limits bacteria.
Children under 3 years old only should use toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.
Children 3-6 years old can use pea size amount of toothpaste.
Children should be seen by a dentist as soon as the first tooth comes in.
Children under the age of eight years old often don't brush their teeth properly. That is why it is important that parents and/or providers help with brushing at least once a day preferable before bed time.
